From our resident regenerative farmer, Dan Beckett, in the field in south east Saskatchewan:

Here is a flax crop seeded with oats and peas. Oats and peas can be separated from the flax. The oat/peas/flax screenings separated from the flax will make great animal feed.

Here is an oat crop with flax seeded as an intercrop. Flax was seeded at 5 lbs/acre and had a high germination. This is an example where an intercrop can cause complications. I wasn’t expecting as much flax as what grew. I wanted to straight cut harvest this field but it will have to be swathed because the flax is still fairly green. I am guessing there won’t be much good quality flax in with the oats.

The first crop is high success. The flax crop benefited from the oats. The oats will be mature and will add value to the screenings. The goal of the mix is to have as many plant families as possible growing in the same field. The soil benefits from the multiple plant families growing together, which improves the flax crop.
